Working Together to Stop Hunger
On Monday, January 16, more than 250 NOVA students, faculty, staff and community members will work together with Stop Hunger Now for MLK Day of Service.
NOVA has participated in the MLK Day of Service for eight years, partnering with nonprofit organizations and encouraging students and the community to volunteer. During the fifth year, campuses partnered with Stop Hunger Now to package thousands of dehydrated meals in an effort to end hunger around the world. Since 1998, Stop Hunger Now has coordinated the distribution of food and other lifesaving aid to children and families in countries all over the world, with the majority of meals going to school lunch programs.
This year, NOVA will also partner with the West Springfield Rotary Club and we are hoping to package more than 30,000 food kits to distribute to those in need.
Dr. Frances Villagran-Glover, dean of Learning and Technology Resources, describes the day of volunteering as a "day on, not a day off" and an opportunity for people to make an impact on others around the world. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center on the Alexandria Campus.
