Northern Virginia Community College and Medical Education Campus Policies

ALCOHOL AND DRUG POLICY
The serving, possessing, and consuming of alcoholic beverages is prohibited at all College-sponsored student events or activities.

ANIMALS ON CAMPUS
Please remember that no domestic animals are allowed in the MEC unless they are on-duty service animals. This means 24 hours/day;7 days a week.

CHILDREN ON CAMPUS
College facilities, including the library, cannot accommodate the care of children while parents are working or attending class. Since the College and its staff cannot be responsible for the safety and welfare of your children, you should make arrangements for them off-campus. Children should not be brought into classrooms or laboratories because of disruption to instruction and possible danger to the children.

CLASSROOMS, LABS AND LECTURE HALLS
Food and beverages are prohibited in the MEC clinics, labs and lecture halls. All classrooms and labs must be locked when not in use.

FIREARMS ON CAMPUS
Bringing firearms and other dangerous weapons onto campus is prohibited. It is a violation of the rules to carry weapons or leave them in a car parked on campus. The only exception applies to duly sworn Commonwealth of Virginia police officers. While civilian attired police officers have the authority to carry firearms, the must do so by keeping them concealed so as not to alarm others.

FOOD SERVICE
Only pack food is allowed to be served in the Medical Education Campus, it is prohibited to cook any meal at the MEC. Caterers must comply with US Food & Drug Administration.

HOLIDAYS:
College facilities are not available when the College is closed for holidays.

PARKING:
To enter the MEC parking garage as a Faculty/Staff member or a Student, please use your NovaCard and enter through one of the designated 'NovaCard Entrances'. As a Visitor to the garage, please enter through the designated 'Visitor Entrance' and punch a ticket to pay the hourly rate. Once inside the garage, all Students with a valid 'B' permit on their vehicle must park on the 2nd, 3rd, or 5th floor. Faculty/Staff with a valid 'A' permit must park on the 4th floor. All visitors must park on the 1st floor. Faculty/Staff and students with NovaCards are not allowed to use their NovaCards to grant access into or out of the garage for others. This is called 'Pass Back' and will be strictly enforced. For further information on Parking policy and procedures please refer to the 'Parking Services Brochure', available in the Business Office.

PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS
The campus dean or designee must approve promotional materials used or distributed on campus must be approved by the campus dean of student development or designee. Material shall be removed by the sponsoring organization within 24 hours after the event. Leafleting in College parking lots, on columns, on windows and in areas other than bulletin boards is prohibited and subject to littering fines.

SMOKING:
Smoking is prohibited in all MEC facilities. A designated smoking area is located in the smoking booth on the first level of the garage.

SUPERVISION:
Class instructor, or designee, must be present during the entire class.

VOLUNTEERS
Anyone providing services on either a short-term or long-term basis "helping" faculty or staff in departmental areas and are not students or employees of the College; they are considered "volunteers". As such, all volunteers will need to contact Ronda Wright so she can complete the required paperwork and orientation to work as a volunteer at the MEC. All volunteers must be >14yrs old. WEATHER
College activities and classes shall be cancelled when the College is closed due to inclement weather or other emergency. Announcements for day classes will be made by 5:30 a.m. for evening classes by 3:00 p.m. To check if NVCC is closed to inclement weather please go to www.nvcc.edu or call NOVANET phone number 703-323-3770.
