The Medical Education Campus is designed to
meet both the student demand for health professions education
and employer demand for a qualified 21st century workforce.
The Medical Education Campus is committed to providing health
care services to the community and increasing access to health
care. This is the first specialized community college center
in the state of Virginia. It features a medical mall and a
network of community-based clinics. It is also a clinical
practice site for nursing and allied health students.
Not only does the Medical Education Campus meet
the needs of NVCC students, but also meets the needs of the
variety of students who attend. The center
is a collaboration among NVCC, George Mason University, Virginia
Commonwealth University, and regional secondary school systems.
High school juniors and seniors are part of the center.
The NVCC associate degree/certificate programs in health care
disciplines are offered. George Mason offers both bachelors
and masters degrees for health care professionals, and Virginia
Commonwealth University offers bachelors, masters, doctoral,
and post-doctoral degrees for health care professionals. Continuing
education courses for healthcare providers are available,
too. Finally, educational opportunities for healthcare consumers
are also planned.
Currently 1,000 students are enrolled at the Medical Education Campus.
The plan for the new center is to open with 1,500 students in
health care courses with a future growth within three years of
3,000 students. George Mason University will work with its students
on-site while Virginia Commonwealth University will offer web-based
programs.
Classes began in the new Medical Education Campus in Fall 2003.
