Nursing: Occupational Description
 

Nurses provide care, treatment, health, and counseling to individuals, families, and group.  They assist in the maintenance of health and the prevention of illness,injury, or disability. Nurses have many options for specialization and advanced training.  The nursing program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission(NLNAC).

salary depends on position/locality
the mean annual salary for full-time RN is about $37,980
graduates are eligible for NCLEX RN licensure

Nursing Responsibilities Include

administering prescribed treatments and medications
assessing the patients physical/mental state
teaching/counseling patients and families
assisting patients in activities of daily living

A Successful Nurse Must Have These Qualities

a critical thinker and problem solver
flexible, able to work as part of a team
caring/sensitive to patients and peers

A Nurse Also Needs

good math/science skills
good manual dexterity/mobility
good written/verbal communication skills

Associate Degree of Applied Science

69 credit program
students must be certified in Health Provider CPR prior to entrance into clinical courses

Clinical education is provided in many area health care facilities

care for real patients with an instructor or preceptor
varying days/hours
some evening clinical hours are offered
student provides own transportation

Physical/ Behavioral Essentials Are Required

  students must be in good health as evidenced by a documented physical exam prior to entrance into the clinical courses and have required immunizations
  the program requires that students meet essential physical and behavioral standards to ensure safe and effective practice in the clinical environment
