  • Who is eligible for services
The Office of Disability Services is part of Northern Virginia Community College/Manassas Campus’ Counseling and Specialized Services. Its mission is to provide disabled students with the support services needed to be successful in college. Any individual who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, who has a record of such impairment, or who is regarded as having such an impairment is eligible for services. Relevant documentation of a disability is required in order to obtain these services.
  • What services are available
The accommodations which disabled students receive depend largely on the nature of their disability and are determined on a case-by-case basis. The Disabilities Services Counselor works with disabled students to ensure that their needs are met.  Accommodations have included: note-takers, extended time for tests, recorded tests and sign language interpreters.
  • How do I begin to access these services
The first step is to meet with Kitty Deal in Howsmon Hall, Room MH 110. Appointments can be made by calling the Counseling and Specialized Services at (703) 257-6610. Students should bring all appropriate documentation of their disability with them to this appointment, at which time the Counselor and the student will (1) review the documentation and (2) fill out an Accomodations Request Form.  The student then uses this form as the basis for obtaining any special accomodation(s).
  • What documentation is required

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 was designed to prevent discrimination on the basis of a disability. Under the Act, colleges are entitled to request documentation which describes a student's  disability.  Any accommodation which is requested by a student is reviewed on a case-by-case basis and must directly relate to the disability described in the documentation. Students must complete an Accommodations Request Form and also provide a copy  of the documentation of the disability ( Educational Psychology testing or pertinent medical reports) to the college.
