Math Center FAQ

Who may use the Math Center?
Students who are currently enrolled in a Northern Virginia Community College credit-level math class at the Manassas campus may use the Math Center.

What questions may I ask the staff?
You may ask the Math Center staff to assist you with odd numbered problems from your textbook or from your online course homework.  The Math Center staff will not help with take home exams, practice tests, quizzes or worksheets.

Can I come to the Math Center if I miss class to have someone "catch me up"?
No.  If you miss class, you need to discuss make up work with your instructor.  Your instructor may suggest that you view the video lectures (if available) in the Math Center.

Can I come to the Math Center for help in preparing for the math placement test?
No.  The Math Center staff does not "coach" you to pass a placement test, since the test is intended to evaluate your long-term knowledge.  It would not benefit you to place into a credit course if your knowledge base is inadequate.

Do I have to make an appointment to get help in the Math Center?
Help is available in the Math Center on a walk-in basis.  Priority is given to students in Developmental Math classes.  If you need extended help on a regular basis, one-on-one tutoring is available for credit math students through the Tutoring Center in MH112.

I am taking a math class at another campus.  Can I come to the Manassas Math Center for help?
No.  The Manassas Math Center is here to serve Manassas students.  If you are taking a math class at another campus, you should investigate what resources that campus has for you.

I am taking developmental math through ELI.  Can I take tests and quizzes in the MASTER Math Testing Room?
No.  ELI students must take all tests and quizzes in a campus Testing Center.  The Manassas Campus Testing Center is located in MH112.

When is the MASTER Math Testing Room open?
The MASTER Math Testing Room for developmental math students is open Monday – Thursday from 9 am to 9 pm and Friday – Saturday from 9 am – 5 pm.  The Testing Room is located in MH219.

What are the MASTER Math Testing Room Rules?
1) No cell phones at any time.  If you have your cell phone out during a quiz or a test, this may be considered cheating.  The consequences may include dismissal from the class and a U in the course.
2) No headphones during a quiz or a test.  Music must be turned off and headphones removed during testing.
3) No scrap paper or paper of your own.  All quiz or test work must be done on our designated colored test paper.
4) Only white multiplication tables may be used on a test or a quiz.  The equations on the back of the yellow multiplication table must be memorized for the quiz or test.

When is the Math Center / MASTER Math Workroom open?
The Math Center / MASTER Math Workroom is open in MH211 Monday – Thursday from 11 am – 7 pm and in MH223 Friday – Saturday from 9 am – 5 pm.
