English as a Second Language Placement Test

Students whose native language is not English must take ACCUPLACER before registering for credit or non-credit courses.

Because of our short Saturday hours, we highly recommend that students take the Accuplacer during the week.

Students taking the ESL placement test must place into level three (3) before taking the math placement test

Students should take the ACCUPLACER test if:

  • They come from countries where English is not commonly spoken or where English is not the official language, i.e., the language used in the government and schools.
  • They graduated from high school in the U.S. but have been here less than 6 years (in most cases).

Students should take COMPASS Reading and Writing if:

  • They come from countries where English is the most common or official language
  • They have been in the U.S. since they were 10 years old or younger and have not returned to their countries for an extended period of time.

ACCUPLACER has replaced the Michigan English Place Test (EPT) used to place students into the various levels of English as Second Language (ESL) courses. ACCUPLACER is a computerized adaptive test developed by the College Board. There are three multiple-choice test components or sub-tests of the ACCUPLACER LOEP: Reading Skills, Sentence Meaning, and Language Use.An informal writing sample is required of students for placement into ESL levels 004, 005, 006, or 007. ACCUPLACER LOEP will immediately place students who score 299 or less. Students scoring 300 and above must do a writing sample to complete the placement test.

Students must do the writing sample immediately after finishing the computerized test. They may take a short break, but the test and the writing sample must be completed in one testing session. In an emergency, students may be given a pass to return within 60 days to complete the writing portion of the test. Students who complete a writing sample will receive placement results within 24 to 48 hours.
