Course Reserves: A Guide for Faculty

The Manassas Campus Library of Northern Virginia Community College maintains a reserve collection of course-related materials to support the campus curriculum programs. Fair Use guidelines are the basis for the library's reserve policy.

What are course reserves?

Course reserves are course-related materials that are kept behind the front desk in the library. Students and staff must show a valid NovaCard (student ID) to check out a reserve item. Reserve items must remain in the library while in use.

Why use course reserves?

Items placed on reserve can be accessed by students any time the library is open (click here for hours). Because reserve items must stay in the library, they are always available. This works very well for:

  • Items students will need to use outside of class time
  • Something you have in limited quantity, such as one book or a sample term paper.
  • Library books that many students will need.

(When several students are researching the same topic there is always the risk that the best books will be checked out by one or two students, leaving little or nothing for the others. To prevent this, please contact a reference librarian and ask for some appropriate books to be placed on reserve for the duration of the assignment.)

How to submit reserve requests:

  • Fill out a copy of the Course Reserve Form and bring it to the library, along with the item to be placed on reserve. (at this time, reserve requests can't be submitted online)

  • Please use a separate form for each item.

When to submit reserve requests:

  • Any time before or during the semester. Please submit requests 24 hours in advance of when your students will need to use them.
