TORNADO
For more information, see Shelter in Place
The difference between a WATCH and a WARNING:
A tornado watch means weather conditions are favorable for a tornado to develop. People should be alert for approaching storms,
classes will continue.
A tornado warning means a tornado or funnel cloud has been sighted, or is indicated on weather radar.
Whenever possible the college Emergency Alert Warning System
(EAWS) will be activated. People should seek shelter IMMEDIATELY.
To report a tornado:
If you are on campus, contact College Police at x-43998. If you are off campus, call 9-1-1.
Protect yourself:
- Seek shelter in the basement or a lower floor interior hallway or corridor.
- Shelter should be a windowless interior room such as a closet, bathroom, interior hall, etc.
- Get under a sturdy workbench or heavy furniture (i.e. table or desk), if available.
- If you are outside and unable to get to a building for protection, move away from the tornado’s path at a right angle. If there is no time to escape, lie flat in the nearest depression (i.e., ditch or ravine).
- Use your arms to protect your head and neck.
Avoid the following:
- Top floors of buildings.
- Areas with glass windows or doors.
- Auditoriums, gymnasiums, cafeterias or other areas with large, free span roofs.
- Automobiles.
Helpful items to have with you:
- Flashlight
- Radio
- Portable or Cellular Telephone
Other information:
- Protection should be sought on the lower levels, keeping well away from glass. Windows and doors should generally be closed.
- If the sirens sound, classes will be dismissed and College functions will be terminated. Instructors will advise students to proceed to a safe area.
- Classrooms and other spaces with exterior windows are not suitable for protection; small, interior spaces are best.
- Under no circumstances should anyone leave a building after the sirens have sounded.
