M. Lobstein As an Associate Professor of Biology, M. Lobstein has taught for NVCC since 1972. Her enthusiastic teaching style is fueled by her passion for the natural world and her interests in plant identification, ecology, and evolution. Here at Manassas, she teaches General Biology (BIO 101-102), General Microbiology (BIO 205), and General Botany (BIO 110). She also offers special interest courses in Spring Wildflowers (BIO 111), Summer Wildflowers (BIO 112), and Fall Wildflowers (BIO 113). Her love of native plants led to Finding Wildflowers in the Washington-Baltimore Area (1994), a Johns Hopkins University Press book which she co-authored. A companion video, Spring Wildflowers of the Mid-Atlantic Region, is also available. In addition to teaching, M. Lobstein contributes to our campus in other ways, such as the development and maintenance of the campus Nature Trail (with the help of students and other faculty) and involvement with the development and implementation of our new biotechnology curriculum. Besides her work here at NVCC-Manassas, she also teaches Field Botany at Blandy Experimental Farm, conducts natural history tours for organizations such as the Smithsonian Associates, and works with teachers of various levels to help them bring botany alive in the classroom and the field. She also participates in a number of volunteer opportunities, including leading wildflower walks at Great Falls Park, VA , and is active in the Virginia Native Plant Society. Professional affiliations include the Virginia Academy of Science, the Botanical Society of Washington, and the Virginia Association for Biological Education. Somehow, she also finds time to pursue her hobbies of wildlife photography and travel. |
