About us

Our campus is part of Northern Virginia Community College, one of the largest community colleges in the nation and the largest institution of higher learning in the state of Virginia. With our open door admission policy, we serve a wide range of students from all over the growing Northern Virginia area. Their educational goals also vary: a two year associates degree, transfer to a four-year college, job skills training/ retraining, as well as just the desire to learn. For details on degree requirements, see the current college catalog.

Manassas is one of the smaller of the five campuses, a fact that we are proud of. We have small classes (generally 20-30 students) that give instructors more opportunities for individual student interaction. Our Biology Department, in cooperation with George Mason University and the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC), is currently developing a program in biotechnology which will eventually encompass several degree and/or certificate programs. This is in response not only to the growing need for trained technicians and other lab personnel in the Washington area but specifically in Manassas: ATCC has moved its offices to our backyard. Eli Lilly, a major international pharmaceutical company, has a new manufacturing plant in Prince William County (Manassas).

For more information about our campus, you can go to the Manassas Campus Home Page.

Adjunct Faculty

We also rely heavily on adjunct, or part time, instructors to teach both labs and lectures. One of the main benefits of our adjuncts is their ability to bring real-world experience into the classroom. Since they are part time, they may only be on campus one or two days a week. To contact them, please refer to your course syllabus. You may also leave a message for them in the Biology Office (room 314 Howsman Hall) or in the Science and Technology Office at (703) 257-6605.
