ART  121-122  Drawing I-II  4 credits

The Drawing sequence is an excellent course for Art degree or studio elective credit or art program transfer.  It is designed for the beginning student who has not had any previous drawing experience but the course is perfect for those student who are continuing from their high school art studies and building a portfolio toward a two-year degree or transfer to a four-year institution.  It is also a perfect course for the person who has just "always wanted to learn how to sketch and draw".

Drawing I covers the study of traditional drawing subjects, such as:  perspective and proportion, value shading, portrait, and figure work, taught in various black and white media.  Drawing II is the color sequence of the course.  In it, the student will work with such media as: color pencils, conte, chalk pastels, and watercolor.  With them, the student will explore a similar variety of subjects that were introduced in the previous drawing course.

ART  131-132  Fundamentals of Design I-II   4 credits

The Design sequence is an excellent course for Art degree or studio elective credit or as transfer credits.   The course is designed for the beginning Foundation year of an Art degree or for those students who want to expand their knowledge of design concepts and applications as used in creating 2 and 3-dimensional images.

Design I covers the study of line, shape, form, and texture as they relate to compositional and structural concerns of visual space planning.  The projects are executed in various black & white media.  Design II is the color theory portion of the design sequence.

ART  241-242  Painting  I-II  4 credits

The Painting sequence is designed for the student who wants an advanced elective in an Art degree program or the student who wishes to explore the amazing world of paint.  The course content is based on the idea that the student has had little or no prior experience making paintings.  Although some previous background in Drawing is recommended, it is not required.  The student may choose to work with either oil or acrylic paints.  Also, depending on their skill level, they may choose to either follow the projects recommended on the class syllabus or work on a series of projects that they devise.  Anything from realism—still life, landscape, portrait, figure—to super-hero representation and on through abstract expressions may be explored. Painting credits can be used as an ART elective and may transfer to a four year program.

ART  243-244  Watercolor  I-II   4 credits

The Watercolor sequence is designed as a ART elective or for the student who wants to explore the techniques and mysteries of painting in Watercolor.  The course content of Watercolor I is based on the idea that the student has had no prior experience with watercolor, but it is also a good review for those who have previously studied the medium.  Watercolor II would be advanced study.  Some background work in Drawing is not required but highly recommended.  On the Manassas campus, this course is usually offered only during the Summer semester.

ART  283-284  Computer Graphics/Photoshop  I-II
4 credits

On the Manassas campus, Computer Graphics is a Studio Art elective. Therefore, it is taught with projects produced by using Adobe Photoshop, rather than the elements required by the Communication Design curriculum.  Computer Graphics I is for the student who has had little or no prior experience with graphics packages.  It is a basic course where the student learns to create and  manipulate objects and ideas using Photoshop.  Computer Graphics II is advanced study based on the information acquired in the first course.

ART  299-01M  Advanced Painting & Drawing   4 credits

Advanced Painting & Drawing is designed for the student who wants to do advanced or individualized study in Painting or Drawing.  It is perfect for someone who has had some painting or drawing background and is not necessarily interested in obtaining the credits for the beginning Painting sequence, but who wishes to do advanced study in technique with one-on-one critiques.  The student determines the series of projects to be produced during the semester and selects the appropriate media.
