DEVELOPMENTAL MATH PROGRAM

MATH 1   MATH 2   MATH 3   MATH 4

PURPOSE

To fill in the gaps in your mathematical background so that you will have the skills required for entry into college credit mathematics courses.   As such, courses in the Developmental Math program do not count toward the requirements for graduation or toward transfer credits.

PLACEMENT TESTING

The placement test that you took in the Learning Lab has indicated that you have placed into one of the courses listed below to develop additional skills.

          MATH 2               ARITHMETIC

                             MATH 3               ALGEBRA I

                             MATH 4               ALGEBRA II

MATH 1 ( individually paced - covers the above coursework )

ATTENDANCE

The individual instructor determines the attendance policy for Developmental Math (see Instructor syllabus). Remember that GOOD ATTENDANCE IS CLOSELY RELATED TO SUCCESS IN DEVELOPMENTAL MATH J

SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS

Videotapes on CD-ROM that are coordinated with the textbooks are available for viewing in the Math Center (MC242).

SPECIAL NEEDS

Within the first 2 weeks of the semester, please inform your instructor of any learning disability accommodation or ADA accommodation that MIGHT be needed, so that plans can be made ( see Madonna Hoecker –Counselor MH110  phone 703-257-6663 for assistance ).

COURSE GRADING

An  “S” (Satisfactory) is earned for satisfactory completion of the course requirements as defined by your Instructor.

An “R” (Re-enroll) is earned for making reasonable progress toward completion of the course requirements as defined by your Instructor.            You must enroll in another semester to complete the requirements.

A “U” (Unsatisfactory) means failure to make satisfactory progress toward completion of the course requirements and/or failure to comply with the attendance requirements as defined by your instructor.

A “W” (Withdraw) means withdrawal from the course.

COURSE TESTING

A grade of 80% or higher on each test/exam is considered mastery level.  After your test/exam has been graded, you must correctly solve all problems that were incorrectly solved on the test.

Additionally, if you receive less than 80%, you may be required to:

1.        Correctly complete additional problems for each problem

      missed on your test /exam

2.        Obtain the approval of your instructor before you retake an alternate form of the test/exam.  Math Center Assistants may approve a first retake if the errors are minor.

3.        You must retake an alternate form of the test/exam if you score less

                than 80%.

MATH CENTER

All tests/exams are taken in the Math Center (703-257-6654).  You may take a test/exam anytime that the Math Center is open, other than during class time. You may also come to the Math Center for minor homework assistance.  Hours are posted on the door and on the NVCC-Manassas Campus-Math Center website http://www.nvcc.edu/manassas/MTHDEPT/MathLab.html.

MATH CENTER TESTS

PLEASE NOTE: A student may take only 1 test per day.

Bring your Assignments/Tracking Sheet as your admission to take a test/exam.

A photo ID may be required.

Bring 2 pencils, eraser, calculator (if permitted).  You may not use cell phones or PDAs as calculators.  All cell phones must be off while testing.

Do not plan to leave the testing room during the test.  This means that you may

not leave to get a drink, use the restroom, check your voicemail, speak to a

friend, etc.

Allow a minimum of one (1) hour for your test/exam.  Tests/exams will be collected 10 minutes prior to the Math Center closing time.

Books, bookbags, etc. must be left in the Math Center on the shelves provided.

NVCC is not responsible for items left in the Math Center during testing, so

please do not bring valuables to the Math Center. (You will be permitted to

take a purse into the testing room.)

Please be sure that cell phones, pagers, etc. will remain in SILENT mode.  If

you are expecting a call, please do not plan to take a test or exam.

Be sure to number the problems and work neatly on the scrap paper and then write the answers on your answer sheet.  Work must be shown for all problems to receive credit for correct answers.  This means that correct answers may be counted as incorrect if the work does not justify the answer. If you are permitted to use a calculator, you must show an appropriate equation for the problem in order to receive credit.

The Center Assistant is not allowed to help you in solving the exercises on the test until after it has been graded.  The Center Assistant is allowed to read a question to you if it is not legible on the test.
