Course Description
Spanish 103 is a conversational Spanish course for students with no previous Spanish. The focus is on communication skills and practical vocabulary. There will be brief, simplified explanations of the structure of the language.
Course Objectives
By the end the course, the student will have mastered the sound system of Spanish. S/he will be able to get and give basic information in the present tense and carry on a simple conversation.
Evaluation
There will be four tests, each of which will constitute 20% of the final grade. A class participation grade will constitute the final 20% of the grade. This participation grade will consist of attendance, homework, and active participation in class exercises. A student who has not missed more than one class during the semester for any reason my elect not to take the last test (given during the final examination period), and have all other components of his or her grade count 25%.
Attendance
Attendance is extremely important in a foreign language class, since aural/oral skills must be practiced in interaction with the instructor and with the other students. Absence from class for any reason will affect the class participation grade. A student who misses 20% or more of the total class time for any reason will not receive credit for the class. If a student arrives late to class after roll has been taken, it is his or her responsibility to speak to the professor after class to be counted present.
Tardies
Punctuality is important in any class. Situations arise which may cause a student to be a few minutes late. Habitual tardiness will not be tolerated. A student arriving more than fifteen minutes late more than three times will be counted absent for the fourth late arrival. Any tardy thereafter will be counted as an absence. Early departures of fifteen minutes or more will be counted in the same way.
Withdrawals
Students will be allowed to withdraw without grade penalty or to change to audit by November 2.
Incompletes
If a student is unable to complete the work for the course by December 10, s/he may arrange with the instructor to complete the work at a later date. In the meantime, the student's grade will be reported based on work completed, with all uncompleted work averaged as F. When the work has been made up, an amended grade form will be filed.
Service Learning
Because we are a Community College, and because one of the students' individual goals should be to become an active and productive member of society, Service Learning is an integral part of gaining an education at NVCC-Manassas. Service Learning is just what it says - one learns while providing a service. It is also a way to build a bridge between our course content and the real world. In Spanish courses, students may provide their services through many different avenues.
Students may elect to donate 5 hours of their time towards Service Learning
to gain 25 extra-credit points towards any area of their grade average.
Students should contact Sister Eileen Heaps of B.E.A.C.O.N. at 368-7491
for information and help getting started. Of course, there are other
places and ways to volunteer these hours. After they have completed
their hours, the students will turn in a one-page self-reflection evaluation
of the time and effort given and of the program itself.
