ENGLISH 009 SUPERVISED STUDY IN WRITING

COURSE DESCRIPTION
English 009 - Supervised Study in Writing - is designed to help the student explore his/her writing and/or reading processes.  It is a support course for English 111.  The focus will be on the student's own writing.  Using teacher-student conferencing and small-group sessions, faculty and students will react to the student's written ideas. 

COURSE OBJECTIVES
The purpose of English 009 is to:

• develop the writer's ability to express clearly and logically his/her ideas and opinions in writing;
• understand the role of audience in the writing process;
• analyze and evaluate one's own and others' writings;
• write, revise and edit an essay which has an identifiable thesis supported by adequately organized, unified, specific details; and
• become proficient in the basic use of a computer word processing program for invention, drafting, revising and editing an essay.

COURSE ASSUMPTIONS

1. Writing is a process.
2. Improving  writing occurs through continuous practice combined with thorough feedback.
3. Reading and writing are interrelated processes; enhancing one will enhance the other.
4. Using computers in the writing process makes invention, revision, and editing easier.
5.    A PROGRESS CHART will record completed requirements and assignments.  Be sure the chart is updated weekly. The chart will be kept by the 009  instructor.  However, the student will also receive a copy of the progress chart for his/her own record.

TEXTS AND SUPPLIES
There is no course text for English 009.  The student will use the texts and materials used in English 111.  Supplemental texts are available in the Writing Center (Rm 102).  The MLA Handbook and A Writer's Reference is recommended and available in the college bookstore.

GRADING
Final grades for English 009:

P (Passed Successfully) -The student has successfully completed all course assignments and has made                                progress in meeting the course objectives.
R (Reenroll)-  -The student stopped coming to class without written permission from the English 111 instructor or from the English 009 instructor.

Also, if the student is required to take English 009, he/she will not receive a grade in English 111 until English 009 is successfully completed.
