NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION AGENDA
Check-In:
Students and Parents arrive between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. New Student Orientation participants will receive an information packet. Check-In will end promptly at 8:30 a.m.
Welcome Address:
Dean of Student Services, Dr. Kirk A. Nooks, will welcome students to NOVA Loudoun and introduce college culture and Student Life.
Student Services Session:
- Students will be advised on NOVA policies, degree programs, courses, testing, transferring, and financial aid. Students will learn how to access college success skills, NOVA technologies, and on-campus resources. Students will register for Fall classes and begin the tuition and fees payment process.
- Parents will attend a “Parenting College Students” seminar including: Financing a College Education, College Culture, Helping Your Student Choose a Degree Plan, Student Privacy (F.E.R.P.A.), and Transferring to a University After NOVA.
Student and Faculty Luncheon:
New students will share a catered lunch with NOVA faculty, staff, and Orientation Assistants. New students will be able to meet classmates, make friends, and learn about:
- Student involvement/participation in class
- Differences between the high school and college academic rigor
- Personal anecdotes on NOVA culture and your experience as both a faculty member and a student
Academic Success Session:
Current Student, Faculty, and Counselor Panels will discuss:
- “Our Student Culture”,
- “Getting Involved: Activities and Leadership”,
- “Being Successful in the Classroom: High School Vs. College”
Faculty will teach a 1/2 Class to prepare students for the academic rigor of college coursework.
- Students will learn how to take college level notes, prepare for tests, and design study guides
Program Presentation:
Students will learn about Academic Programs, Clubs, Sports, and Activities during this interactive fair. Students will be able to request more information on the programs and student organizations that most interest them. Sample programs include:
- Honors program
- Bio-Tech
- Vet-tech
- Foreign Language program
- Theater programs
- Phi Theta Kappa
Campus Tours:
Orientation Assistants will lead new students and guests on a tour of Hot Spots around campus including: the Student Lounge, Hall of Fame, Campus Bookstore, Counseling Center, Green House, Playing Fields, Tutoring Center and the Duck Pond. This is a time to make yourself feel at home. And, watch out for those Loudoun Ducks!
