Gay Marriage Debate

On November 18, 2003, the Massachusetts Supreme Court voted 4-3 to allow gay couples the right to be married. Opponents of gay marriages have vowed to fight similar legalization efforts in other states and through federal legislation. Some states have proposed civil unions rather than marriage. Should other states follow Massachusetts lead? What role if any should the federal government take?
