Geospatial Career Pipeline Initiative

The Geospatial Career Pipeline Initiative (GCPI) started as a three year program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor designed to increase the number of geospatial technology professionals in the workforce. The activities of the grant followed the guidelines set forth by the Geospatial Technology competency model. Under GCPI, NOVA and its partners worked with high school and college students, providing educational and employment opportunities in the field of geospatial technology. GCPI also provided professional development opportunities for high school teachers. Under this grant, GCPI presented high schools with 71 computers, 73 GPS units and 278 geospatial textbooks. In addition, 25 local teachers were provided with training opportunities and 118 high school students, teachers, NOVA students and faculty attended 19 conferences, workshops, job fairs and training. GCPI established a Citrix server which allows students access to software and data off site. The Geospatial Technology Department at NOVA is committed to the goals of the initiative and continues to provide opportunities to high school students, teachers and NOVA GST students.

NSF Skills Workshop

NOVA Completes Regional Geospatial Skills Survey

In October 2013 as part of a National Science Foundation Grant, Advance Technology Education program, NOVA hosted a two-day workshop to identify the core duties and tasks of geospatial analysts in the Northern Virginia region. The nine expert panel members represented not-for-profit firms, small companies, defense-related industry, and county and federal government agencies.

The U.S. Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) (Herndon, VA) hosted the workshop. Also partnering with NOVA for the workshop was the GeoTech Center, the nation’s center of excellence for community college geospatial education.

The results of the workshop are being used to revise NOVA’s geospatial courses, keeping them relevant and timely. This work is also being used to support the Geospatial Intelligence certificate the GST Department at NOVA is hoping to institute in the near future. The results of the Regional Geospatial Skills Survey are available below for other educational institutions across the Virginia and the nation to assist with their geospatial programs and for Government and industry to assist them in hiring and educating geospatial analysts.
