Three distinguished scholars join senior curator Virginia Mecklenburg in an exploration of American art and the movies. Professors Katherine Manthorne, The Graduate Center, City University of New York; Erika Doss, University of Notre Dame; and curator James Deutsch of the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, discuss the links between art and film from the days of silent movies to the epics of the 1940s. A reception will follow. The event is free, but registration is required.
This program and the exhibition Telling Stories: Norman Rockwell from the Collections of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg are organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Booz Allen Hamilton has provided generous support as the corporate sponsor of the exhibition. The Museum also gratefully acknowledges the contributions of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.

Flyer for Event:
Dear Colleagues:
Welcome back to another dynamic year of teaching. I hope your semester is off to a fantastic beginning and you are finding that you have the best students ever. I also hope that you reserved some time for spirit and energy renewal over the summer months.
I invite you to please join us for our Fall VCCS professional development seminar, with a focus on personal self-development. Your campus representatives have selected the theme this year of creating energy; and, with that in mind, we will be on the move for most of our seminars this academic year.
Several of our seminars will also be in other locations than the CIT. We will be making more detailed announcements in the coming weeks. Your VCCS-CTE chair and faculty associates are arranging seminars that will stimulate energy, thinking and expertise as we move and work in other environments, so stay tuned for our announcements of where we will be going to renew and build new energy; while, at the same time, gaining knowledge for teaching and learning in our classrooms and professional environments.
In the meantime, we know that this first October seminar is going to be a really special treat for you! Please join us for discussion, healthy foods and energy renewal through Nordic Walking! There will be a few door prizes, as well as opportunities for you to make some purchases of Nordic Walking Sticks and other stress busters.
I look forward to seeing you then. Please feel free to register directly with me through e-mail or through your campus representative. Please also join me in welcoming our newest Loudoun VCCS-CTE representative, Barbara Crain, Professor of Geography. Enjoy the weekend!

Seminar Overview
Our ability to live life fully requires keeping a well designed balance between three major areas: how we balance “STRESS” in our everyday lives; our food intake and choices and how we “nurture” our bodies; and, how much physical activity is present in our everyday lives, including cardio respiratory fitness and exercise.
This session will focus on balancing personal and professional wellness with a discussion on positive stress management, eating the right foods, and practicing Nordic walking to increase energy. Seminar activities will include part presentation and discussion and outdoor physical activity in the natural environment, movement in nature, and team building and renewal. Seminar topics include the following:
Part 1: Creating Energy through Positive Stress Management
Part 2: Nourishing the Life force—Getting energy and Vitality from the Right Foods
Part 3: Walk and Talk in Nature: An Introduction to Nordic Walking
