Dr. Barbara Howard and Mr. Gerald Boyd-First Fireside Chat: The Changing Mosaic
“THE CHANGING MOSAIC: DESIGNING SUCCESSFUL EXPERIENCES FOR THE NEW AMERICAN COLLEGE STUDENT”
THANK YOU FOR COMING.
DURING THIS INFORMAL FIRE SIDE CHAT, YOU WILL VIEW EXCERPTS FROM THE TELECONFERENCE OF FOUR RESPECTED PRACTITIONERS AND SCHOLARS.
THEY DISCUSS THE CHANGING FACE AND ATTITUDE OF OUR NEW COLLEGE STUDENT.
TODAY'S DISCUSSION SHOULD GENERATE AN INTERESTING DIALOGUE ON THE FOCUS OF TEACHING AND LEARNING IN THE 21ST CENTURY.
SO WE HAVE STRUCTURED OUR TIME TOGETHER TO ALLOW FOR MUCH DISCUSSION.
MY NAME IS BARBARA HOWARD AND I SERVE AS THE DEAN FOR THE BUSINESS AND PUBLIC SERVICES DIVISION.
JOINING ME IN FACILITATING TODAY'S FIRE SIDE CHAT WE HAVE JERRY BOYD, WHO SERVES AS THE DEAN FOR LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE.
WE ARE BOTH ON THIS CAMPUS.
IF YOU HAVE WONDERED WHY JERRY AND I ARE FACILITATING THIS FIRST FIRE SIDE CHAT.
THE ANSWER IS RATHER SIMPLE.
THE TOPIC ADDRESSES WHAT WE BELIEVE TO BE A REALITY.
OUR STUDENTS HAVE CHANGED.
BEFORE WE GET STARTED, LET ME CALL YOUR ATTENTION TO THE MATERIAL IN YOUR HANDOUT. THIS MATERIAL WILL BE REFERENCED BY INDIVIDUALS IN THE VIDEO.
YOU HAVE PAGES 7 AND PAGES 17-19 FOR FUTURE REFERENCES.
I HAVE ALSO INCLUDED PAGES 33, 34 WHICH PROVIDES
FOR YOU A HANDY LIST OF ON-LINE RESOURCES.
THIS VIDEO IS ACTUALLY THREE HOURS LONG.
BECAUSE WE HAVE JUST TWO HOURS AND WISH TO ALSO ALLOW ENOUGH TIME FOR A HEALTHY DISCUSSION,
JERRY AND I HAVE PREVIEWED THE VIDEO AND HAVE SELECTED CERTAIN SEGMENTS OF THE VIDEO TO SHARE WITH YOU.
OUR FORMAT FOR THE FIRESIDE CHAT IS ONE WHERE WE WILL ALTERNATE BETWEEN WATCHING THE VIDEO AND ENGAGING IN DISCUSSION.
SO EXPECT US TO PAUSE THE VIDEO FROM TIME TO TIME,
SO THAT WE CAN CHAT.
BUT BEFORE WE BEGIN THE VIDEO,
WE HAVE A LITTLE PREDICTION EXERCISE FOR YOU THAT JERRY WILL ORCHESTRATE.
MOST OF US HAVE BEEN HERE FOR A WHILE.
I WOULD LIKE FOR YOU TO GIVE THOUGHT TO WHAT YOU THINK THE PROFILE OF OUR STUDENTS HERE AT NVCC LOOK LIKE NOW?
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE NVCC STUDENT?
ARE FACULTY ADJUSTING TO THE CHANGES THEY SEE WITH THE DIFFERENT CULTURAL STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM?
THE VIDEO PRESENTATION WILL BEGIN WITH A DISCUSSION ON “HOW STUDENTS HAVE CHANGED?
YOU ARE GOING TO HEAR FROM BOTH STUDENTS AND ADMINISTRATORS.
WE WILL RUN THIS CLIP ABOUT 25';
AND BY THE WAY, IT WILL BE THE LONGEST CLIP
AS WE STOP TO CHAT FROM TIME TO TIME. THE OTHER CLIPS WILL BE CONSIDERABLY SHORTER. AND WE'LL SKIP MUCH OF THE 4-YR COLLEGE DISCUSSION AS WELL.
SHOW VIDEO - HOW HAVE STUDENTS CHANGED/STUDENT/ADMIN
GROUP ACTIVITY & REPORT OUT
QUESTIONS POSED DURING TODAY'S DISCUSSION: Group Work-
Barbara asks question: What is the profile of the NVCC student body?
Who is really sitting in our classes?
The new demographics makes for extraordinary changes, what do you see as the expectations for students?
What are we doing to deal with the impact of this immigration to deal with the issue of diversity?
How are we doing in terms of embracing the changes we see?
Do we have difficulty dealing with differences?
Jerry shows some demographic slides.
VIDEO - MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT 2-YR INSTITUTIONS
Show video from Misconceptions-
(Stop at end of panel discussion.-Skip interviews-Stop at Strategies (Moderator)-15 minutes.)
DISCUSSION - DIVIDE INTO 2 GROUPS & REPORT OUT
BARBARA FACILITATE GROUP DISCUSSION:
WHY DO OUR STUDENTS COME TO NVCC?
WHAT ARE THEIR GOALS
JERRY FACILITATE GROUP DISCUSSION ON:
“WHAT DO YOU THINK NVCC HAS DONE TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF OUR CHANGING POPULATION?”
QUESTIONS POSED IN TODAY'S DISCUSSION:
Mentioned the academic reputation of NVCC, NY Times Article on the top ten Institutions foreign students select and NVCC was only CC.
On Herman Blake - Do we play to the differences at the expense of the similarities because we think it is easier? What do you think about his statement?
What about the “comfortable” learning environment Herman spoke about?
On group work, share example of ESL students working in groups and the issue of younger male student being apprehensive about critiquing an older male student in his group - it was a cultural “Respect” issue for him.
Do we talk with students and hear their “voices”?
SAY -- LET'S CONSIDER WHICH SEGMENTS OF THE COLLEGE SHOULD BE INVOLVED.
SO LET'S LOOK AT ….
WHAT SPECIFIC STRATEGIES MIGHT BE USED TO CREATE SUCCESSFUL STUDENT LEARNING EXPERIENCES?
VIDEO - STRATEGIES - 6 MINUTES)
IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS THAT RESPOND TO THE DIFFERENT CULTURES?
JERRY HAS SOME BRIEF THOUGHTS ON WHAT WE ARE SEEING HERE AT THE COLLEGE WITH OUR GENERATION 1.5 STUDENTS.
LET'S LOOK AT SOME OF THE DIFFERENT STRATEGIES THAT ARE DESIGNED TO RESPOND TO DIFFERING CULTURES.
Begin with Interviews-end at Stuart-Skip to Moderator.-8 minutes
Some Closing thoughts
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?
FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT THE FUTURE
I think that what we see is that
IT IS NOT THE STUDENT BUT THE FACULTY THAT HAS TO CHANGE THEIR PEDAGOGY.
PART OF THE ISSUE ABOUT DIVERSITY HAS TO DO WITH
HOW ARE WE GOING TO CHANGE OUR PRACTICES WITH IN THE CLASSROOM TO MEET THE CHANGES IN THE POPULATION THAT WE ARE SEEING.
WE KNOW THAT THE POPULATION IS CHANGING
WE KNOW THAT THE STUDENTS ARE CHANGING
THE QUESTION IS, HOW DO WE MAKE THIS MOST
CREATIVE AND CONSTRUCTIVE SITUATION POSSIBLE?
IT SEEMS THAT IF WE GET INSTITUTIONAL COMMITMENT AND FACULTY INVOLVEMENT,
WE COULD HAVE A VERY EXTRAORDINARY FUTURE.
OR WE CAN CHOOSE NOT TO.
WE ARE ALL FAMILIAR WITH CHARLES DARWIN'S PHILOSOPHY ON THE SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST.
DARWIN HAD THIS TO SAY:
“IT IS NOT THE STRONGEST OF THE SPECIES
NOR THE ONE MOST INTELLIGENT
BUT THE ONE MOST
RESPONSIVE TO CHANGE.”
YOU SEE, IT IS MY OPINION THAT….
WE NEED TO NOT IGNORE THE FACT THAT WE NEED TO CHANGE
WE NEED TO NOT DENY THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE AND
WE NEED TO MOBILIZE OUR COLLEGE CAMPUSES
TO BE RESPONSIVE TO THE CHANGES
WE NEED TO MAKE.
