THEY DISCUSS THE CHANGING FACE AND ATTITUDE OF OUR NEW COLLEGE STUDENT.
TODAY'S DISCUSSION SHOULD GENERATE AN INTERESTING DIALOGUE ON THE FOCUS OF TEACHING AND LEARNING IN THE 21ST CENTURY.
SO WE HAVE STRUCTURED OUR TIME TOGETHER TO ALLOW FOR MUCH DISCUSSION.
MY NAME IS BARBARA HOWARD AND I SERVE AS THE DEAN FOR THE BUSINESS AND PUBLIC SERVICES DIVISION.
JOINING ME IN FACILITATING TODAY'S FIRE SIDE CHAT WE HAVE JERRY BOYD, WHO SERVES AS THE DEAN FOR LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE.
WE ARE BOTH ON THIS CAMPUS.

THE ANSWER IS RATHER SIMPLE.

OUR STUDENTS HAVE CHANGED.

Mentioned the academic reputation of NVCC, NY Times Article on the top ten Institutions foreign students select and NVCC was only CC.
On Herman Blake - Do we play to the differences at the expense of the similarities because we think it is easier? What do you think about his statement?
What about the “comfortable” learning environment Herman spoke about?
On group work, share example of ESL students working in groups and the issue of younger male student being apprehensive about critiqueing an older male student in his group - it was a cultural “Respect” issue for him.
Do we talk with students and hear their “voices”?

I think that what we see is that
IT IS NOT THE STUDENT BUT THE FACULTY THAT HAS TO CHANGE THEIR PEDAGOGY.
PART OF THE ISSUE ABOUT DIVERSITY HAS TO DO WITH
HOW ARE WE GOING TO CHANGE OUR PRACTICES WITH IN THE CLASSROOM TO MEET THE CHANGES IN THE POPULATION THAT WE ARE SEEING.
WE KNOW THAT THE POPULATION IS CHANGING
WE KNOW THAT THE STUDENTS ARE CHANGING
THE QUESTION IS, HOW DO WE MAKE THIS MOST
CREATIVE AND CONSTRUCTIVE SITUATION POSSIBLE?
IT SEEMS THAT IF WE GET INSTITUTIONAL COMMITMENT AND FACULTY INVOLVEMENT,
WE COULD HAVE A VERY EXTRAORDINARY FUTURE.
OR WE CAN CHOOSE NOT TO.
WE ARE ALL FAMILIAR WITH CHARLES DARWIN'S PHILOSOPHY ON THE SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST.
DARWIN HAD THIS TO SAY:
“IT IS NOT THE STRONGEST OF THE SPECIES
THAT SURVIVES
NOR THE ONE MOST INTELLIGENT
BUT THE ONE MOST
RESPONSIVE TO CHANGE.”
YOU SEE, IT IS MY OPINION THAT….
WE NEED TO NOT IGNORE THE FACT THAT WE NEED TO CHANGE
WE NEED TO NOT DENY THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE AND
WE NEED TO MOBILIZE OUR COLLEGE CAMPUSES
TO BE RESPONSIVE TO THE CHANGES
WE NEED TO MAKE.
