Susanne McDougall Carmack grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history, and holds a Masters Degree in painting from the University of Maryland. She has lived in the Washington, D.C. area for most of her life and currently lives in Derwood, Maryland with her husband and daughter.
A painter and printmaker, she has shown in many area venues including The Corcoran Museum, The Phillips Collection, Arlington Arts Center, Rockville Arts Place, School 33 in Baltimore, McLean Project for the Arts, and Glenview Civic Center Mansion in Rockville. A believer in education for the arts, she has taught at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland, University of Maryland and Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore. She has given public high school workshops in printmaking and private instruction.
Recent honors include a grant from The Maryland State Arts Council in both 1998 and 2002 for two-dimensional art. She has been featured in New American Paintings magazine twice, in 1999 and 2001. A frequent fellow at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts in Sweet Briar, she has also been a resident artist twice at the Ragdale Foundation in Lake Forest, Illinois.
Carmack’s work can be seen in the Andrea Schwartz Gallery in San Francisco, Cervini Haas Gallery in Scottsdale, Sears Peyton in New York, and Soho Myriad in Atlanta.
Carmack maintains a printmaking and painting studio at her home in Derwood, Maryland.
