REMOTE ACCESS PROBLEM SOLVING

If you have problems logging on please review the following problem solving tips. Remember, access to library databases is ONLY available to current NVCC students, faculty, and staff.

  1. Check the time.  NVCC network services will be interrupted for  scheduled maintenance on the 2nd and 4th Friday of every month from 11:00 pm until 3:00 am.  Visit the IT Help Desk web site for updates on other scheduled maintenance or network problems.
  2. Some versions of Internet browsers may have trouble accessing the proxy server.  NVCC has used these instructions successfully with Netscape 4.7, Internet Explorer 6.0, and AOL 7.0.  Click on one of these links if you would like to download a copy of Netscape 4.7 or Internet Explorer 6.0. For users with modems, this download may take at least two hours.
  3. Browsers that MAY not work with this system: Netscape 6.0x, Internet Explorer 3.x, Internet Explorer for Mac, and WebTV. You also may not be able to access databases with this system if you are using an off-campus office computer in your workplace (due to "firewalls" your organization may have established) or if you have a cable modem connection.
  4. AOL users may encounter problems accessing the databases or WebPac (the NVCC library online catalog). If you do have this problem, keep AOL open, but minimize it. Then open a browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, and try accessing the databases or WebPac through that browser.
  5. If you click on a library database and receive:
    • an error message OR
    • a request for a card number OR
    • some other type of request for id and password unlike the graphic on the previous page
  6. If you get an error message stating that your User ID is not recognized, review the steps for Student access or for Faculty/Staff access again to make sure you're using the correct User ID and password.
  7. If you still can't log on, call the NVCC Help Desk at (703) 426-4141 or e-mail them at ithelpdesk@nvcc.edu.  Please include a detailed explanation and your phone number.
  8. If a database is not available or you need help finding books, magazine articles, or other resources for coursework, ask a librarian for help online at http://www.nvcc.edu/library/Ask.htm or call your campus library:
