Class assignment: Students need to find information about a famous person, a state, or a country.
Concepts to Be Covered in Library Instruction (developed in consultation with instructor):
Introduction to the Library (where to get library card, library hours, location of ESL Area, photocopy machines, where to ask for help)
Finding and Using Reference Books
· Reference vs. Circulating books (for this project, reference books are more appropriate)
· Using call numbers to find a book on the shelf
· Finding information in basic reference books (alphabetical order, look under last name)
· Writing down the source of information
Finding, Using, and Evaluating Web Pages
· Typing a URL in to get to a web page.
· Navigating a web page
· Terminology for navigating a web page
· Evaluating a web page (very basic)
Handouts/Exercises:
Handouts: Where to Find Information About Famous People OR Where to Find Information About Countries, U.S. States, and Famous People
Exercises: 1) Reference Exercise (Word document): After learning about reference books, students will work in pairs to use a reference book to locate information about a particular person.
2) Web Exercise (Word document): After learning about how to get to web sites on their topic, students will work in pairs and use a web site to locate information about their topic. They will then evaluate the web site, based on basic criteria discussed in class.
