Faculty and Staff Email

What is my NOVA email address and how do I check email?

The email account is given to you when you are first employed by the college. The address format is generally the first letter of your first name and last name followed by @nvcc.edu.

Example: jsmith@nvcc.edu

Use Microsoft Outlook to check NOVA email when you are on campus.

To check email off campus, see the Off-Campus Mail page.

How do I configure my mobile device (iPhone, iPad, Android) for NOVA email?
Click here for instructions on how to configure Exchange ActiveSync for iOS (iPhone, iPad) and Android devices.
What are the POP3, IMAP and SMTP Settings?
How do I re-create an offline data file in Outlook 2010?
How do I turn on or off cached Exchange mode?
How can a mailing list be created to email students?

NOVA no longer creates mailing lists for students. Instructors must create the list themselves. The instructions for creating a list in Outlook are as follows:

  1. Make sure you are in the main menu screen of Outlook.
  2. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Distribution List.
  3. In the Name box, type a name. The distribution list is saved in your Contacts folder by the name you give it.
  4. From here, click select members if you want to add names from an address book or click Add New if you want to add names manually.
  5. If you want to add a longer description of the distribution list, click the Notes tab, and then type the text.
  6. Click Save and Close.
How do I block junk email and spam in Outlook?

Rules in Outlook can be used to block spam and junk emails from certain individuals. Rules can be set up to filter out all emails containing adult content.

How to create a rule:

  1. Go to the Inbox screen.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Rules Wizard.
  3. Choose server.
  4. Click New.
  5. Select "Move new messages from someone." Follow the directions in the wizard from there.

What you should do to avoid spam and junk emails:

  • When you receive spam, delete it.
  • Never reply to spam.
  • Avoid giving out your primary email address.
  • In Outlook, you can create filters to automatically delete messages with certain subject lines.
What if my mailbox is over the size limit?

The mailbox size limit is 50 MB. At 2 GB, you will get a warning that the mailbox is over the size limit. Emails will either need to be deleted or archived (saved off the server.)

Can NOVA faculty and staff who have retired keep their college email account?

As of June 28, 2011, all NOVA retirees may keep their college email account indefinitely provided that they complete the annual security awareness training and adhere to the Acceptable Use Agreement and college email policies. Violations of the Acceptable Use Agreement or college email policies may result in permanent loss of college email privileges. Inclusion on distribution lists is subject to the discretion of the list owner.

What is my VCCS email account?

The Virginia Community College System provides all students and faculty/staff with a VCCS email account. This account@email.vccs.edu is the myNOVA account to access the academics tools.

Google Apps for Education are also available to faculty and staff through the VCCS account.
