Applying for an f-1 visa

Applying for an F-1 Visa | Changing to F-1 Status | Maintaining F-1 Status | F-1 Employment

The visa is a stamp which is placed in your passport by a United States Embassy outside the U.S. The visa permits you to apply to enter the U.S. at an airport or border crossing. It is your I-20 Document that allows you to remain in the U.S. as a student.

Obtaining an F-1 Visa

  1. Apply for the I-20 at the College or University
  2. Make an appointment at the U.S. Embassy after you learn that you have been admitted
  3. Pay the SEVIS fee (Student Exchange and Visitor Information Service) of $100.  This may be paid online at www.fmjfee.com.
  4. Go to U.S. Embassy for interview
