CRIMINAL LAW                        LGL 218

 

INTRODUCTION

 

Focuses on major crimes, their classification, elements of proof, intent, conspiracy, responsibility, parties and defenses.  Emphasizes Virginia law.  Gives general principles of applicable constitutional law and criminal procedure.

 

OBJECTIVES

 

1. The student will learn the elements of the various crimes as well as the various ways in which a person can be a party to a crime.

 

2. The student will learn the various defenses to crimes.

 

3. The student will learn the law of arrest and search and seizure.

 

4. The student will learn the various components of a criminal trial.

 

5. The student will be introduced to the constitutional questions posed in these areas.

BASIC CONCEPTS TO BE TAUGHT IN COURSE

 

This course is designed to introduce the student to the various substantive and procedural areas of criminal law.

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

 

1. The student must attend at least 13 of the 16 class sessions.

 

2. The student must take both quizzes and both examinations.

 

3. The student must complete the case brief and class presentation assignment.

Class #16:  Final Examination

 

GRADING

 

The quizzes will count 15% each. The examinations will count 30% each.

 

The case brief assignment will count 10% of the final grade.

 

A:   90-100

B:   80-89

C:   70-79

D:   60-69

    F:   Below 60
