| The objective of this course is the introduction of the student to the various techniques used on the potter's wheel to create basic container forms. Projects: 1. Execution of a cylinder shape that is at least twice as tall as its outside diameter and is of even wall thickness. This project should be repeated until the student is competent in the execution of this form. All cylinders will be cut in half vertically to reveal actual wall thickness.
2. Execute a set of 4 matching cups with trimmed foot rings and pulled handles.
3. Exploration and production of bowl forms.
4. Exploration and production of narrow-necked forms.
5. Each student will select a ceramic artisan's wheel thrown work to duplicate and present to the class. A single piece of pottery will be chosen to duplicate. The student will present this work, an image of the original and an oral report on the artisan. Students are encouraged to conduct research in books, magazines and the internet. Supplies: Clay: Any suitable clay that can be fired to cone 6. Clay is available in the college bookstore or at Creative Clay.
Tools: Pottery Tool Kit or a collection of tools that include: small natural or synthetic sponge, wooden rib or stiff plastic rib, flexible metal or plastic rib, wooden modeling tool with cutting edge, wire cut-off tool, pin tool and trimming or ribbon tool.
Small plastic bucket, large clean-up sponge and towel. Optional: bats & bat pins.
