  Course Catalog Description

Explores the design and production of sculptural ceramics, including handbuilding and use of the potter’s wheel. Prerequisite is Art 154 or instructor’s permission. Lecture 2 hours. Studio instruction 4 hours. Total 6 hours per week. 4 credits.

  Course Content Summary

Students will be introduced to the use of clay as a medium of expression in the creation of non-container, non-utilitarian forms. The term sculpture can be described as any art object that is three-dimensional and is not a vessel or an architectural structure. Ceramic sculpture differs from other sculptural media in that clay forms must be hollow with a wall thickness that is uniform.

Much sculpture from western cultures have used the human form as a subject of study. Students are advised that life study models will be used in this course.

Students provide clay and tools, but glazes and firing are included in the cost of the course.
