GER 102
Beginning German II
Course Description
Beginning German II is the second of two semesters of elementary German, which will acquaint the student with a limited range of vocabulary with the more complicated structures of the German language. The prerequisite for German 102 is German 101 or equivalent. Upon the completion of GER 102 the student has acquired the basic language skills which are required for the Intermediate German language courses.
At the end of the GER 102 the student will be able to understand, speak, read, and write more complex German sentences. He will be able to read non-edited texts with the help of a dictionary. The student will understand the German word order of dependent and relative clauses, the attributive adjective endings, reflexive and dative verbs, the passive voice and the hypothetical meaning of subjunctive verb forms.
The student is required to follow strictly the syllabus in preparation for each class session. Reading ahead in order to be aware of what is discussed in class as well as being able to present the daily assignments orally or in writing is important.
The student may be required to visit the language laboratory frequently and to complete the exercises in the laboratory using the audio tapes and/or computer software. Lab books may be collected for correction.
There will be a test after each chapter in the book.
The final grade will be computed as follows:
Class participation 33%
Tests and graded assignments 33%
Final Examination 33%
