I. Course Materials and General Information

Text: Bowler's Guide, American Bowling Congress $1.50

Available from instructor if desired

Class meeting place and time: Wednesdays 1:30-3:10 pm Seminary Plaza Bowling Alley. From Tyler, cross Beauregard and take W. Braddock Road to 2nd light, turn right at Van Dorn St. and then left into shopping area. Alley entrance is left of Safeway and downstairs.

Fee: $4.50 to be paid at the front desk in the bowling alley before bowling for 2 games. $3.50 if you have your own bowling shoes. Additional games $1.75 each.

Instructor's Office: Visual & Performing Arts and Public Services-Tyler 230

Dress: Street clothes allowing for freedom of movement. (No tight sleeves or pants or bulky jackets.) Shoes are provided with fee; students may use their own if they wish.

II. Course Evaluation

Game Average 20 – 30%

First Ball Average 10% 90 - 100 = A

Improvement 0 – 10% 80 - 89 = B

Attendance 4 0% 70 - 79 = C

Quiz I 10% 60 - 69 = D

Quiz II 10%

III. General Course Objectives

1. To learn the 4-step approach and hook ball delivery, or other acceptable method.

2. To understand bowling etiquette, rules and terminology.

3. To learn the principles involved in converting spares.

4. To gain enough skill to enjoy bowling as a recreational activity.

IV. Course Content

1. Introduction: Explain course content, grading, policies, fees and the games.

2. Ball selection, shoes, lane assignments.

3. Stance, four-step approach, delivery and follow through. (3 or 5 step if experienced)

4. Type of deliveries and straight or hook ball release. (curve if experienced)

5. Spot bowling technique of aiming.

    1. Principles of spare coversion.
    2. Analyzing common faults.

8. Scoring.

9. Terminology.

10. Tournament and handicapping.

V. Attendance

A. "Regular attendance at classes is required. Absences equal to 30% of the scheduled instructional time for a course will be defined as unsatisfactory progress."

1. If you miss more than 3 classes, check with the instructor to see whether you should withdraw from the course.

2. If you stop attending class and fail to go through official withdrawal procedures, you will receive an "F".

B. Those who have perfect attendance and participation will have their lowest scores eliminated when determining their average.

C. Make-ups - you may make up two (2) missed classes. You can do this either by bowing 2 extra games ($1.75/game) following our class session for one absence or by bowling 2 games outside of class and bringing in score sheets.

VI. This activity can be hard on the back and the knees. Please notify the instructor if you have had any previous problems in these area, and fill out a medical form. Discontinue the activity if you experience pain in these or other areas.

VII. We are using a public facility - please conduct yourselves accordingly.

VIII. As it is a classroom environment at the bowling alley, there will be no smoking or drinking beer during class time. You may take a break outside or at the opposite end of the alley after completing 2 games if you must smoke. You may bring food and non alcoholic beverages to the tables behind your lane, as long as it doesn't interfere with your turn to bowl.

IX. Explanation of the day's activities will be given at 1:40 each day. You should have your ball selected and games and shoes paid for before that time. Lanes will be turned on following the explanation.
