The (Pretentious) Prepositions List Page

Here are what we use as prepositions.  Many handbooks contain this list, but in case you don't have one handy, the list is included here. You're welcome.

In English we have seventeen prepositions of one syllable:

at

by

in

on

near

to

from

down

off

through

out

past

up

of

for

with

like

We also have about 21 two syllable prepositions.

about

along

below

during

above

among

beneath

except

across

around

beside

inside

after

before

between

outside

against

behind

beyond

over

under

We have about six prepositions formed by combining some of the one syllable prepositions

into

upon

without

onto

within

throughout

But we can get even more creative by adding a describing word with a preposition or by grouping some prepositions.

according to

out of

on account of

aside from

prior to

owing to

inside of

by means of

in front of

subsequent to

because of

as to

That's what we have by way of prepositions. Until, that is, you invent some more.
