Office Hours:
  • The scheduled hours are posted at www.nvcc.edu/home/tstantcheva/.
  • By appointment. Note: Students who request a meeting but do not show up, or are late by more than half an hour, will loose their right to request appointments.
Textbooks:
Attendance:
  • Students are expected to attend all scheduled lecture and laboratory sessions. If an online meeting is scheduled, due to an emergency or other reason, student participation in those meetings counts towards attendance.
  • In a hybrid class, participation in all activities and timely execution of all the assignments is counted as attendance.
  • Students should read the assigned chapters in advance, and come to the in-class sessions ready to participate in problem discussions.
W/Audit Grades:
  • No Audit will be permitted after the first week of classes.
  • Students who neither attend class nor submit any assignments by the Census Date, Sep.10, will be administratively withdrawn from the class.
  • No withdrawals will be permitted after the Last Day to Withdraw Without Grade Penalty, Nov.2
  • Students are responsible for withdrawing themselves from the class.
Grading scale:
A: 90-100% B: 80-89% C: 70-79% D: 60-69% F: <60%
Grades: Total points 500. Lab - 20%; Quizzes - 20%; 4 Exams - 10% each; Final Exam - 20%.
Lab:
  • Total points 100. Experiments and Data: 60 pts. Assignments: 40 pts.
  • If a student is late by more than 15 min for the lab, the student can still do the lab but cannot receive credit for that lab.
  • Students without shatter-resistant protective eye goggles or with open-toe shoes will not be permitted to stay in the laboratory room!
  • Students must have a passing lab grade in order to pass the class!
Quizzes:
  • Total points 100. There will be weekly on-line quizzes posted on Blackboard due every Thursday, 10:00 pm
  • Reading: 40 pts. No more than 40 pts count toward the final grade.
  • Problem solving: 60 pts. Mostly consist of MC questions with ocassional show-work problems. No more than 60 pts count toward the final grade.
  • It is the student's responsibility to know when each quiz is due.
Exams:
  • There will be five 1-hour exams each worth 50 points consisting of either show work or mutliple choice problems. The top four highest scores will be counted toward the final grade.
  • The two-hour final exam is worth 100 points, is comprehensive, open-notes, and all problems are show work.
  • For in-class exams, students may bring either pre-approved 3"x5" formula card, or use the formula sheet provided by the instructor.
  • Students may bring only a pen/pencil and a calculator to in-class exams; programmable calculators must have blank memory before the exam.
Make-up policy: There will be absolutely no make up exams or labs.
Academic misconduct: Cheating will not be tolerated in any form. Copying and using someone else's work to obtain credit, as well as letting someone else copy your work, is considered cheating.
  • Cheating on an exam will result in failing that exam. A second offence will result in automatic failing of the class!
  • During an exam, if you leave the room for any reason, you will not be permitted to continue working afterwards.
  • Special attention will be paid by the instructor to any inconsistencies between the on-line and in-class performance!
  • All assignments are individual unless otherwise specified.
