  • By appointment. Note: Students who request a meeting but do not show up, or are late by more than half an hour, will loose their right to request appointments.

Attendance:
  • Students are expected to attend all scheduled lecture and laboratory sessions. If an online meeting is scheduled, due to an emergency or other reason, student participation in those meetings counts towards attendance.
  • Students are responsible to know all the material covered and information discussed in class regardless of whether they have attended the class or not.
  • In a hybrid class, participation in all activities and timely execution of all the assignments is counted as attendance.
  • Students should read the assigned chapters in advance, and come to the in-class sessions ready to participate in problem discussions.

Grading scale:
A: 90-100% B: 80-89% C: 70-79% D: 60-69% F: <60%
Grades: Total points 500. Lab - 20%; Quizzes - 20%; Exams - 60% total.
Lab: Total points 100. Experiments and Data: 60 pts. Assignments: 40 pts.
  • All labs and assignments are 5 pts each.
    • Experiments: 3 pts for lab activities; 2 pts for complete and accurate results.
    • Assignments: 5 pts.
  • Late/missed policy:
    • Late for lab: For each 5 min of being late, 1 point will be subtracted from the lab grade for that day, up to 5 pts.
    • Late assignments/reports are accepted no later than a week after the due date and their maximum grade is decreased by 1 point.
    • One lab will be dropped.
  • Students without protective shatter-resistant eye goggles or with open-toe shoes will not be permitted to stay in the laboratory room!
  • It is the responsibility of the students to check with the schedule and to know which labs require protective goggles.
  • Students must have a passing lab grade in order to pass the class!
Quizzes: No more than 100 pts can be counted toward the final grade.
  • Total points 100. Each week, there will be at least two on-line quizzes posted on Blackboard.
  • No late quizzes will be accepted. The most current quiz deadlines will always be posted on Blackboard.
  • It is the student's responsibility to know when each quiz is due.
Exams: Total 300 pts. Out of six exams, only five count towards the final grade.
  • There will be six one-hour exams each worth 60 points consisting of either show work or mutliple choice problems. The top five highest scores will be counted toward the final grade.
  • The instructor will provide a formula sheet. Students may print it out at home in advance, and bring it to class. No other formula sheets will be allowed.
  • During an exam, students may bring only a pen/pencil and a calculator programmable calculators must have blank memory before the exam.
  • No cell phones or other electronic devices are allowed to be turned on during an exam.
  • No late or make-up exams will be given. For students who know in advance that they will not be able to attend an exam, an arrangement may be made for that exam to be taken at EARLIER time.
Make-up policy: There will be absolutely no make up exams or labs.
Academic misconduct: Students are expected to abide by the NVCC Rules on Academic Dishonesty. Be advised that:
  • Cheating will not be tolerated in any form. Copying and using someone else's work to obtain credit, as well as letting someone else copy your work, is considered cheating.
  • Cheating on any assignment will result in failing that assignments. A second instance of cheating will result in automatic failing of the class!
  • During an exam, if you leave the room for any reason, you will not be permitted to continue working afterwards.
  • All assignments are individual unless otherwise specified.
  • The use of unauthorized electronic devices during an exam is considered cheating.
  • For those students who show a discrepancy greater than a full letter grade between their in-class and out-of-class performance, the instructor reserves the right to administer additional in-person examination.
