Instructors Longterm Plan:

Get on the
Web Design Fast Track with the
Web Design Certificate Program
at NOVA - NVCC, Alexandria campus

No time for a full degree program in web design?

This fast-track program will give you all the basic skills you need to build a website for a small business or organization in less than two semesters.

Who's it for?

If you’re the kind of person who likes to jump in and experiment, our evening classes will fast track you to be ready to sell your first site—or land your first job as a web designer in less than two semesters.

Already a pro in print design? Many of our students come from print design backgrounds. You'll have a head start, and our Photoshop class will focus on Web features most likely new to you.

Not a programmer type?  Our class Building Web Sites with Free Content Management Systems will show you how to install interactive features like blogs, forms, news alerts, photo galleries, product catalogs, even shopping carts without having to learn the programming languages these systems are built with.

What skills will I learn?

Our class An Introduction to Web Page Design will give you the basic coding you need to create and troubleshoot your own sites.

CSS and Mobile Layout will give you command of Cascading Style Sheets to create pages that shift shape for mobile devices while also controlling typography, design, and layout.

Dreamweaver with Bootstrap lets you master this popular Adobe product to build sites faster. And now you can supercharge your productivity with Dreamweaver's shortcuts for Bootstrap-based pages. Bootstrap sets the standard for good looking mobile pages.

Our Web Graphics with Photoshop zeros in on the features you’ll need in every Website: banners, backgrounds, buttons, photo collages, sprites, and animations.

In Building Websites with Free Content Management Systems you'll learn how to choose, install, and customize free systems like Wordpress, Joomla, and Drupal and learn how to choose which system best meets your clients needs.

Web Design Studio Lab pulls it all together. You'll work on a real world project and complete a site of your own design that lets you practice all the skills learned in this program. You will also learn how to interview a client, plan a site, and charge for your services as an independent designer.

And finally our two recommended classes let you deepen your skills with technologies for sites with today's look and features: Javascript and Bootstrap.

When are classes?

Most classes are Monday and Wednesday nights, 6:30 to 9:30 pm. But in cold months I teach on Saturday afernoons instead of Monday nights. You must successfully complete all "Fast Track" courses listed above to receive a program certificate. Individual classes may be taken without pursuing the program certificate, and individual class certificates will be awarded. All classes in this program may not be offered every semester. It is recommended but not required that courses be taken in the order listed above in "What skills will I learn?" Contact me to discuss exceptions.

I didn't think I'd get much out of this class since I've been using Photoshop for years, but I did! I enjoyed coming and I'm using my newfound techniques at work every day.

Your coursework really, really prepared me well. I hit the ground running when a longterm client suddenly announced that all web sites had to be responsive from now on. I was the only one on the team prepared to code responsively, and I started that day. Thank you so much for all of your courses. I am way, way into responsive coding now and just loving it.
