COURSE PURPOSE:  to explore the medium of clay and hone your creative instincts by working with this                    

malleable material.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:   

 153 Ceramics I  will develop skills at various handbuilding techniques, surface decoration and glaze applications.

154 Ceramics II will develop skills at wheel throwing as well as advanced surface decoration.

298, 236 Advanced and Sculptural Ceramics  will design and construct complex, hand built and/or wheel thrown  forms and explore surface decoration that enhances the expression of their forms.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Regular Class attendance:  Roll will be taken.  3 unexcused absences will be allowed.  More than three will negatively affect your grade.  You are responsible for info missed during your absence.  If you must withdraw from the class, do so on an official form obtainable at the Liberal Arts office (CM 342).  Failure to do so will result in the grade of F.  The last day to withdraw without grade penalty or change to audit is:  March 31.
  2. Critiques:  Your work will be evaluated at group critiques at mid-term and at the end of the term.   Attendance and participation are  MANDATORY at both critiques. 
  3. Assignments: Students must closely follow the assignments.  Ask permission to change any aspect of an assignment.
  4. Sketchbook:  Students must record lectures, demos, drawings of ideas and found images.  At least 40 pages are required for the semester.
  5. A class Filed Trip to an art museum (TBA) and a written report on the trip.

                          

GRADES ARE COMPUTED AS FOLLOWS:

  Sketchbook 10%                        actively participating in classes,                             

                                                     critiques, completing field trip re-

                                                     ports,  performing studio maintenance, etc.)

 Students are expected to follow Information Technology Student/Patrol Ethics Agreement as posted in computer areas and academic integrity standards as set down in the Student handbook.
