Sponges are the members of this phylum.  They are simple and primitive animals that probably have evolved from flagellated protozoans.  These animals lack tissues, and their body resembles a sac perforated with holes.  The name Porifera means, "Pore bearer".

Most sponges are marine, and only a few live in fresh water, and most are asymmetrical and are filter feeders.  Sponges are sessile animals in which they are attached to a fixed spot and don't move.
