The name gastropod means "belly foot".  Gastropods are the most diverse and abundant group of this phylum.  Snails, periwinkles, abalones, terrestrial and sea slugs are the members of this class. 

A single twisted shell protects most gastropods and few such as the slugs lack the protective shell.

Most gastropods are herbivorous and live in diverse habitats and are bilaterally symmetrical.
