The name of this phylum refers to animals with spiny surfaces.  (Greek, echino = spiny, derma = skin).  All the members of this phylum are marine animals, adults are radially symmetrical, and most are sessile or slow moving (sedentary) animals.

They are characterized by their unique water vascular system with tube feet for moving and capturing pray.  The members of this phylum are: starfishes, sea urchins, sea biscuits, sea cucumbers, and sand dollars.
