Arthropods are the make up
the largest group in terms of species and diversity. Arthropods
are name for their jointed appendages. (Greek, arthro = joint, poda =
feet).
Some of the appendages are used for locomotion, food handling, taste, defense, touch, and reproduction. The exoskeleton of arthropods are made of chitin. Chitin is a tough flexible material which protects the soft body parts and prevent dehydration. Arthropods are divided into five major classes. Class Insecta are the most aboundant and diverse animals. Class Arachnida includes spiders, scorpions, mites and ticks. Class Crustacean includes crabs, lobster, barnacles, etc., . Classes Centipede and Millipede include centipede and millipede. |
