Summer session

Based in part upon review of other VCCS college practices regarding summer faculty employment, a work group of the Ad Hoc Budget Crisis Committee recommended that NOVA’s full-time faculty work load during summer be reduced from 10 credit hours at pro-rata pay to a maximum of 6 credit hours at pro-rata pay, effective summer, 2009.  Thanks to the buffering impact of the federal economic stimulus funds, I believe that NOVA can implement this change over a two year period, rather than all at once. Consequently, beginning with summer, 2009, faculty summer pay rates will be reduced from 10 credit hours at pro-rata pay to a maximum of 8 credit hours at pro-rata pay with up to 4 additional credit hours at the overload rate.  Beginning with summer, 2010, the faculty summer pay rates will be reduced to a maximum of 6 credit hours at a pro-rata rate as recommended with the number of additional credit hours at overload rate yet to be determined.

We may also initiate a voluntary leave of absence for select areas of the college for 12-month professional/administrative faculty and classified staff during the summer as recommended by the Personnel Services Committee and the Ad Hoc Budget Crisis Committee.  As soon as the details regarding health insurance coverage are known we will issue guidelines and the details for voluntary leaves of absence, beginning with summer, 2009.
