Comanche Territory

(1950)

Directed by George Sherman

Stars Maureen O’Hara and Macdonald Carey

Runtime (76 min.)

Comanche territory is set in the southwest around north Texas. Word leaked out that silver had been found in Comanche territory. The U.S. government issued a treaty stating that no white man could enter the territory. Before the treaty’s arrival, it was stolen so that anyone could occupy the Comanche’s native area and mine the silver. Jim Bowie stumbles upon this debacle and takes it upon himself to solve the mystery and help the Indians. In the end, Jim Bowie saves the Comanche territory, catches the bad guy, and gets the girl.

I didn’t enjoy this movie. It is full of corny jokes and bad acting. It took me several tries just to watch it through and it is only 76 min long. The extent of non-fiction in this movie was that there was a man named Jim Bowie. It was obviously made for entertainment purposes only. The Indian Chief, Quisima is not based on any real Indian either. The Indians were also portrayed as the stereotypical Indians with feathers when in fact they dressed in modern clothes at the time and were excellent traders, fluent in several languages.

I gave this movie a C+ for entertainment and a D- for historical value
