On the Study of History...

History is too often presented as a collection of random events and facts to memorize. We should not hesitate to search for meaning or a moral in the past, even though our conclusions must always remain tentative. We study history not only with hopes of avoiding the misfortunes of those that have come before us, but to exploit their accumulated wisdom and to engage ourselves in the ongoing effort to leave the world a better place for our descendants.

In these courses, students will not be expected simply to memorize facts, but to apply what they have learned to demonstrate understanding of how the past informs and influences the present.

"The past is never dead. It's not even past."
William Faulkner
