Course Purpose: To introduce students with a limited or no background in computers
to current information technology concepts, principles, and terminology. This course will provide students with the necessary technical background to better understand everyday information technology operations and microcomputer concepts.
Course Overview: This course presents modern information technology concepts and the effects of computers on daily life. This course discusses the Internet, the hardware components of the microcomputer, input & output methods, operating systems and utility software, communications & networks, computer security & privacy, database technology and software development and programming languages. This course focuses on the Internet as a repository of information and the personal computer as a productivity tool as a stand-alone or networked device.
Required: Students may purchase Scantron form 882-E
from the NVCC
book store or the instructor
before taking tests and/or exams. You
may buy all the Scantron forms from the instructor for $2.00. The instructor will bring the forms to class
on the day of the test.
Course Withdrawal Policy: Students failing to attend the first two class meetings (i.e. the first two weeks) will be automatically dropped from the course. You may voluntarily withdraw from the course and receive a grade of “W”, no later than Mar 23, 2012. After this date, the NovaConnect System will automatically assign the grade of “F”
Attendance Policy: CLASSES START ON TIME! THERE IS A 30-POINT PENALTY FOR
EACH MISSED CLASS. THIS CAN REDUCE
YOUR OVERALL POINT TOTAL SUBSTANTIALLY IF YOU MISS 5 OR MORE
CLASSES. LATE ENTRY INTO THE CLASSROOM
DISTURBS THE LECTURE ALREADY IN PROGRESS.
20-POINT PENALTY FOR LATENESS.
LEAVING A LECTURE DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE CLASS IS RUDE. ABSENT-FROM-CLASS EXCUSES VIA EMAIL ARE NOT
ACCEPTABLE UNLESS IT IS AN EMERGENCY.
PLEASE TELL YOUR INSTRUCTOR BEFORE CLASS IF YOU HAVE AN APPOINTMENT THAT
WILL REQUIRE YOU TO LEAVE BEFORE THE CLASS IS OVER. Daily attendance will be
taken. Students are responsible for covering all work missed and submitting
assignments on the scheduled dates. Students are required to take tests
and examinations at the scheduled times
only. Please contact me as soon as
possible in the event of emergencies such as illness, unscheduled and
unavoidable travel, military deployment etc.
I will NOT leave any make-up exams in the
Assignments: Students are expected to complete reading assignments before each class, attend class, and submit homework assignments on the scheduled due dates. You are welcome to turn the homework assignments early if you so choose.
Late Penalties: Late submission of homework assignments will result in an “F” for that assignment unless you present a VALID WRITTEN EXCUSE to your instructor.
Withdrawals: Students are responsible for withdrawing themselves from the course. Students withdrawing before the “Last Day to Withdraw without Grade Penalty” date for the semester will receive the grade of “W” which does not affect a student’s grade point average (GPA). Otherwise, the grade of “F” will be given.
Homework: Ten homework assignments of 100 points each will be given.
One 200-point oral presentation
(10 minutes in length) on information technology will be required. You should select a topic on information
technology and do your research on the Internet or other technical resources. The Web site www.howstuffworks.com is an excellent
source of information. Based on past
experience, students who do not complete all of the homework always fail to get
the highest possible grade in this course.
You are strongly encouraged to complete
Tests & Exams: You must have a valid and verifiable written excuse to make up a test or exam. Verbal excuses and excuses via email will NOT be accepted.
Ten homework assignments worth 100 points each.
One oral presentation on information technology worth 200 points.
Five chapter tests worth 100 points each.
One midterm examination worth 300 points.

Emergency Evacuation Instructions:
Please take note of the closest fire exit to the
classroom. You will find a framed
emergency evacuation plan on one of the walls in each of the classrooms. This describes the procedures that must be
followed, and diagrams the evacuation routes that are to be used in case of
emergency. All occupants must
immediately evacuate the building when the fire alarm bells/lights are
activated unless the Building Warden has advised that the system is undergoing
a scheduled test. Occupants will exit
the building using posted evacuation routes or the nearest safe exit. Elevators will not be used during emergency
evacuation. Upon exiting, occupants are
to continue moving until they are at least 300 feet from the building. The instructor will assist handicapped
persons with mobility disabilities. You
should take your coats, books, purses and other personal belongings with you,
as there is no assurance that you will be allowed to return. Evacuation procedures will be discussed
during the first class session.
