Using browsers in Windows 95

In every computer and software course I teach, people have more troubles with the operating system than with the actual software. (Mac users stop snickering; these are mostly Mac problems as well) Here are a few problems that always come up:

1. Using a mouse.  Mouse devices are a struggle for people with anything other than pianist-nimble fingers. Users have trouble

  • double-clicking to start a program (Solution: click once and press enter)
  • putting the right part of a pointer on a link (Solution: the finger, not the hand, goes on the link)
  • putting their right fingers on the right mouse buttons (Solution: left mouse button gets index finger, right mouse button gets middle finger)

2. Typing addresses and search terms.  Problems here include

  • not setting focus on areas for typing (Solution: click where you want to type, then type)
  • problems with replacement of highlighted text
  • Case 1: text not highlighted, cursor at "o" - typing "m" adds the letter m

  • Case 2: text highlighted - typing "m" replaces everything highlighted with next typed letter
