HTML 4

The rough version history of HTML goes something like this:
1993 - HTML+
1995 - HTML 2.0 - basic markup
1997 - HTML 3.2 - tables, frames, fonts
1998 - HTML 4.0 - style sheets
There really isn't an exact version, because although the dates above
are the official w3c dates, implementation in browsers has occured
at different times, to different degrees, for different browsers and platforms.
So although HTML 4.0 does not seem to be officially approved, the 4-level
browsers support a fair amount of it.
However, neither browser supports all of the HTML 4 specifications,
and - wouldn't you know it? - they support HTML 4 differently.
And that's just for folks who have NS 4+ or IE 4+. Pre-4 browsers
and non-NS or MS browsers like Opera do nothing with HTML 4.
Altogether HTML 4 is something good to know about, but it's nothing
you can depend on. We'll go over some things you can do now with
HTML 4 in class. You might also want to have a look at the demos
