Why graphics are a bit difficult

Graphics software is quite different from word processing software.

Most people feel that basic writing is not a difficult process, and many people feel that word processors make writing easier.  Word processors are not very difficult to learn - only a few features are needed to create professional-looking documents - and so probably everybody who uses a computer can use one to some degree.

Most people feel that basic drawing is more difficult than basic writing. In addition, graphics software programs make drawing more difficult.  Ultimately they make printing easier, but my a colleague of mine in visual arts tells me that he sees students struggling again and again to execute a design in Photoshop which would take minutes to do on paper.

Graphics programs then are more difficult to learn than word processors.  They are based on a skill - drawing - that most people find more difficult to begin with.  And a fairly large number of features must be controlled to produce professional-looking documents.
