Forums

The web has lots of free forums, too, and apparently some good ones that you can set up yourself.  I'll confess; I haven't used these services much, so I'll work quickly:

Two forum host

One of my former students hosted a message board on www.insidetheweb.com. When I set one up, it seemed fine - there are ads on every page, but they're not totally intrusive.

Voy Forums seems to have a nicer design than the above service, but I haven't worked through one of its forums yet. www.voy.com

Other places

The Free Site has a number of hosting services available at www.thefreesite.com/freechatprograms.htm

The site above has links to things that a lot of us have heard of but I've never used, including AOL Instant messenger, ICQ, and Pow-wow.

Don't forget that you can set up your whole electronic course, including forums, at blackboard.com
