Welcome!

I will be teaching two sections of EDIT 772; one during Winter Intersession and one during the first half of the Spring 1999 semester.  The Winter course will be for newer users, while the Spring course will be for more experienced users.  Students may repeat the course once for credit.

Check the schedules to the left for more information on the differences between the two sections.

4/9/99 - End of class!

We'll do formal GMU evaluations this evening, but I never see those again. If you have time, could you fill out my one-question evaluation form?

Info for 3/11/99

Tonight we did Javascript and HTML 4. Brief re-lecture on creating response forms.

These are the tools and sites presenters for the next two class meetings:

3/25 - Teresa Microsoft Site Builder
  Kaye Gif builder
  Dennis Real Audio
Cheryl HTMLHelp and The Free Site
Ester I'll remember in a minute...
  Lisa Something graphics-related
  Pam Web Buddy
  Tracy Photoshop Wow Book

4/1 Diane Claris Home Page
  Betty still deciding
  Shirley still deciding
  Laurel A couple of books
  Kathy WebBoard
  Jim still deciding
Keysha web sites w/graphics and counters

General presentation guidelines:

1. 5-10 minutes; 5 is better.

2. Give value - try to ensure the class walks out with knowledge they can use the next day.

3. HTML or PowerPoint slides are helpful - we have Office 97 in the lab, and you'll have the projector and laser pointer.

4. We may be able to get some software programs installed, but don't plan on it. Make sure your presentation doesn't require the program. (Good idea: include a screen shot or two from the program - remember that you can hit "Print Scrn" and paste screen shots into Office products or a graphics editor).

You can post your papers on or before 4/1. I have added Forum 6: Tools and Site Reviews for this.

>>This part is really important!<<

Also, in wrapping up your final projects, please review the course documents carefully - these are what I am required to evaluate you on.

Info for 2/25/99

1. Cool sites forum added

Info for 2/18/99:

1. I've revised the schedule

Info for 2/11/99:

I've put a short review and lesson plan on a separate page for this evening.

Info for 2/4/99:

FrontPage will be our editor for the course; part of the course will involve getting you comfortable (or at least knowledgeable) using it. I would like you to make at least your project site or a mockup of your final project in FP. If you want to do your final project in FP, great; other editors are fine, too.

I encourage you to work in groups, but if you prefer to work alone, that's o.k. Your project site will be more of a notes site, but I would still like you to write one.

Note: For an example of a project site, see my project site for the NVCC-ALexandria campus home page

You can use client work for your final project if you feel it falls loosely in the category of "richly interactive engaging educational education-related web site."

GSE portfolio sites are o.k. if you are in the early stages and can fool around with your design some. If the design is set and its just your job to add words and pictures, you won't have much room to grow in the class.

(Below is mostly to help me remember - use it if it makes sense, if not, don't worry about it)

Any groups which would like to set up a collaborative site, where all members can download and work on files. Bare-bones info:

ftp://mason.gmu.edu
cd jwilliam

web pages viewable with ftp prefix, e.g. instead of

http://mason.gmu.edu/jwilliam/astd_group/home.htm

type

ftp://mason.gmu.edu/jwilliam/astd_group/home.htm

also, full filename must be specified - there is no default filename
