Introduction

Service-learning is an emerging teaching and learning technique that combines community service with academic study. Service-learning can be a significant undertaking, but with some guidance and resources, it can also be one of the most successful approaches to learning that a professor may ever try. Consider these statements gathered from student surveys in a statistics course where a service-learning project was completed:

"It's a good feeling to be part of something, to do something different."

"It's a wonderful learning experience, it gives a wider, better and enriching perspective of whatever was taught in class. . ."

"It has been the most valuable learning experience of my post-high school education."

"Thank you for letting us be part of this wonderful project!"

"It can enhance quality of study and harmonious relationships between students."

This document is intended for use by NVCC-Alexandria campus faculty. The first part is a report on a study of service-learning completed by a class of statistics students. The second part is a list of resources available for faculty when considering incorporating a service-learning project in their own courses. The third part is a list of frequently asked questions (FAQ's) about service-learning. Use this document and the resources listed to begin a service-learning project. Although there is no guarantee all students will respond with statements like those listed above, you should expect a new, enriching, and valuable teaching and learning experience.
