Steps

          In a conference presentation at the Virginia Assessment Group Conference (2001), Lynch outlined her developmental problem solving process, with which instructors can facilitate critical thinking skills in their students by identifying the students' current levels and scaffolding (or supporting) their students as they move toward the next higher level. 
         
Table 1 below identifies Lynch's five basic critical thinking levels, their goals, and their corresponding skills, while Table 2 lists identifying criteria for each critical thinking level.  Finally, Table 3 lists prompts that instructors can use as they move their students up to the next level of critical thinking.
