Spanish
199 is
a workshop class for Spanish 101-102 & Spa 201-202 students who need additional
help in mastering a second language. It is primarily designed to benefit those
students who have difficulties in any one, or all of the four skills of listening,
reading, writing, and speaking. These learners will display a variety of problems
like spelling, memorization of vocabulary, and difficulty with grammar.
Students:
- may or may not
be documented or identified as having a learning difference with dyslexia
and/or an attention deficit disorder.
- learn ideally
in a multisensory learning atmosphere in which instruction is presented via
the visual, auditory and tactile/kinesthetic learning modalities.
- learn best when
the tactile/kinesthetic modality is incorporated into most lessons by providing
hands-on types of activities.
- need to acquire
study skills and language learning strategies for successful learning.
Students who enroll
in the workshop class each semester are able to complete their Spanish language
studies successfully when completing 15 hours of additional tutorial work in the
Spanish 199 course each semester.
Spanish

Students

- The sounds
of Spanish
- The association
of the sounds of Spanish to their letters
- The association
of Spanish letters to their sounds
- The spelling
and syllabication of words
- Vocabulary
techniques
- Basic Sentence
Structure
- Spanish
and English grammar
Focus
in the Spa 199 Workshop is to also:
- Identify
one's learning style
- Investigate
avenues for receiving appropriate documentation under the law
- Develop
self-advocacy skills for accommodation
- Acquire
study skills
- Acquire
language learning strategies
- Develop
test-taking strategies
- Develop
concentration and memorization techniques
- Utilize
computer technology to enhance learning
Lower anxiety and stress during the learning process
Enrollment
in the class is made possible with:
- LD documentation
and/or
- Recommendation
made by Spanish instructor, or Dr. Laura Franklin, Assistant Dean for Foreign
Languages, LD counselors.
Ideally,
students should be enrolled at the beginning of the semester, and classes meet
for two hours a week from the beginning of the semester. If a student
is identified as needing the workshop, he/she can still enroll in the course
since enrollment is on-going.
Procedure
for Enrollment:
- Get permission
slip from your instructor and/or counselor.
- Contact
Dr. Margarita E. Hodge via email before
beginning class.
- Enroll with
Sam or Jessica at the front desk of H & SS.
- If enrolling in
the middle of the semester, be sure to be in the course before the second
8 wk. deadline.
